I know I have been scathing about our Parliament, indeed I have written about the death of democracy and that MPs are redundant. I have watched the BBC Parliament channel quite often, though only since Brexit has been on the agenda and actually only since last December.
If I was an MP and I’m glad I’m not,I would find it the most frustrating institution, full of antiqued and arcane procedures and whilst it is full of tradition, it is no longer fit for purpose in the 21st century. Technology is not the answer to all things but it would streamline and speed up many parliamentary procedures, not least of all voting. They all sit there with their smart phones and tablets and I’m sure they belong to all sorts of groups and other media outlets, it’s not much of a leap to utilise them for parliamentary business? It gives every member an opportunity to vote on crucial matters whether they are present or not.
Westminster Palace is no longer fit for purpose, for one thing, there isn’t enough room for every member to sit, although much of the time the place is sparsely populated anyway. The building is in desperate need of major repair but even if this is carried out, a new building should be found or built to accommodate a modern Parliament. Westminster can still be used but can become a heritage site.
Parliament cannot be taken seriously when most of its business is still conducted following procedure that is centuries old, it has to change. Whilst I appreciate tradition, as much as anyone and it can’t all be ditched, it must be dragged kicking and screaming into the modern world
