Community

I’m not sure whether it’s complete madness  but one thing for sure this virus pandemic is certainly highlighting every type of human behaviour. In the area where I live generally it seems people are behaving mostly okay. Yes the supermarket shelves are bare of all the goods that everyone is experiencing. So far we only have two confirmed cases. From a population of over 700,000 not to bad. So far.
I am retired and spend a lot of time in my house writing , drawing as well as all the usual tasks that need doing everyday. I am not to bothered about being isolated at home and I could do with loosing a few pounds! I am perfectly happy in my own company after 67 years I should be. I can get lost in writing and music, as I do already.
Perhaps isolation from each other will not be a bad thing. After all isn’t this the “me” generation! Maybe once it is safe again we will find that we actually might enjoy each other’s company? I understand the massive disruption this causes in peoples lives and I am not belittling any of the damage and hardship it will cause.
There are those who already do and will show complete disregard for all the advice and precautions we should be taking. Predictable really. There are always those who think they know better and care little for anybody but themselves. These are often people who should be isolated even when no virus is threatening us.
I will try be kind and if my help is required will give it freely. I hope that most will do the same.
Like all things, it will pass and in years to come we will look back and say “Remember that horrible virus of 2020”. I hope lessons are learned and when, not if another virus hits we will be better prepared.
We are often accused of being a nation that no longer knows our neighbours and have become unsociable and have lost all sense of community. It is an accusation I have often levelled myself and am probably guilty of being part of the problem. My hope is that this “crisis” will change that and self isolated or not we will emerge out the other side being kinder and with more inclusiveness and community spirit?
One can hope!
