Two words today from the wonderful Susie Dent
Mumpsimus............someone who can’t tell the difference between their own delusions. Like how large a crowd size is!
Winkley...........A lost object that immediately turns up after you’ve bought a replacement!
Sport. What is your opinion? I like most sport although I find that as I have grown older my patience to watch an entire football, rugby match, motor race, or other live sport is no longer there. I am sure if England reached a Final i would watch it all but otherwise I get bored. Perhaps it stems from last few years where if you do not have Sky you are reduced to watching highlights. Sky’s monopoly of Cricket, Football and Golf is far too much but money talks and they have the most. I hate Murdoch and his maniacal need to dominate the media market.
I have played many sports. In my younger days I was handy footballer, played scrum half in Rugby, could bat and bowl, I was not that bad at sprinting. I’ve played Tennis, Badminton, Squash, Snooker, Darts, (although they are questionable as sport those last two, games yes but sport mmmmm!). You should all know by now i have always cycled and I play golf. I can no longer play any racket sport because I have a damaged left eye and cannot see clearly out of it, so my perspective is not good.
Sport has changed dramatically in my time, not just professionally and commercially. Generally sportspeople are fitter and more athletic in most sport and with the advances in technology and nutrition etc they have made massive improvements which is what you would expect. Generally it appears that the average height of all players has increased. They are more athletic, stronger, faster with great stamina.
There are many a debate over whether sports people from the past would be as good in todays world. The answer is of course they would because that would have access to all of todays training methods, many would be even better, it stands to reason!
I know there are many who derive no pleasure from sport. They might appreciate the skill and talent but are just not that interested and that is fine. There are those who are fanatical about supporting a particular team or sport or individual and that is fine too. I for my sins have supported West Ham Utd since I was a young boy. In recent times that has not been anything other than a rollercoaster and this season was no different. I have only seen them play “live” twice. The first was many many years ago and I was hit by a flying bottle, which kind of puts you off!
I have tried this week to avoid commenting on you know who and you know who else! Their joint antics prove everyday how both are totally unfit to govern or hold any official post and that is all I will say. Sadly in the UK the alternative is not strong enough and has a lot to overcome before enough of the voters can give them their support.
Stay well
