Day 159
I must say a word about Marcus Rashford. I have in the past disparaged wealthy footballers for their overpaid profession but how ever much this footballer earns he is worth every penny, if he can use his celebrity and fame to influence governments and now to get companies to get together to help with child poverty. More power to him and more importantly to what he has set up.
It is damming when a premier league footballer is having to lead, trying to help a situation that should be addressed by those in authority. It is yet another indication of the way governments ignore their responsibility for those who are worse off! The have to be embarrassed into changing and actually doing what they should have. I have written many many times regarding the abject failure of government to do what so many of us know is right and in many cases would pay more in tax for? There are many many many problems that require addressing and only a limited amount of resource to address them with but those in need should always be a priority. We live in a selfish society, the me culture. I know there are lots of people who help and serve society but the prevailing attitude of our country is one of “it’s not my problem”!
I am not trying to be holier than thou, nor do I claim to be any better than anyone else. I volunteered at a homeless shelter but very quickly realised that I could contribute little to the lives of the men who came there. I probably had expectations that were unrealistic and my decision to not go anymore was my failing not theirs!
Generosity and giving are acts that as you get older you realise are the greatest pleasures you can get. To help someone is not only good for them but gives you a warm feeling inside and there is nothing wrong with that!
Stay well
