Day 46

Morning all

I have been meditating. In my earlier years I would have sneered at anyone who professed to practice meditation or any form of mindfulness. I would have condemned them all as the open toed sandal brigade who just could not cope with normal life. As one ages ones attitudes evolve and change. This is not something that has come on recently but rather an evolving interest that has developed over many years.
I have for a long time liked to try and clear my mind and just think of nothing. I have tried to meditate but have not sustain it for long.
Now I have started to meditate in the early morning, just before I get up. Time “stands still” and some of the colours floating before your closed eyes remind me of the sixties! I don’t think you can clear your mind completely and if you can it is only briefly. Maybe practice will improve that? It is cleansing just thinking of nothing and I find it has made me feel happier and more relaxed. ( I was pretty happy and relaxed anyway) It may be an illusion but whatever the cause if it works don’t knock it!

I read that Mr Schapps the Transport Secretary has spoken about people walking and cycling more, especially to get to work. I applaud this, many of you will know that I have been a cyclist all my life and ride my bike at least three times a week. I cycle for fitness and pleasure, for recreation and going back to my previous paragraph it helps me clear my mind.
I have some reservations, and I think that are obvious ones? In order for people to cycle safely and in comfort there would need to be significant investment in our infrastructure. We do have cycle paths and lanes but they are woefully lacking and often end abruptly. I would suggest with everything we are going through at present, I suspect investment in cycle safety is not going to be up there at the top of the list (Has it ever been?) Perhaps Schapps thinks that the reduction in traffic will continue and the roads will become safer? If he does then I fear he is will be sadly mistaken. Dragging people out of their cars is a something we have failed to achieve for a very long time. If you ridden and walked around the streets where you live , as I have, the evidence of our reliance on the motor vehicle is abundantly clear by the massive amount of them parked in every space imaginable! Grass verges are no longer empty, corners no longer kept clear, pavements blocked, front gardens almost non existent as they have been turned into a car port. We have garages but for many the size of car that were built for no longer exist and most can’t be bothered to use them anyway. I am just as guilty.

Today’s agenda, Wendy and I are going t have a ride around the local area on, yes you’ve guessed it, bikes!

Stay well
